Since emerging in Italy in the 18th century, roulette has indisputably become one of the most popular casino games. Its many existing variants are played by millions of players all over the world, both online and in brick-and-mortar establishments. For many centuries, a casino’s roulette has made or broken its reputation.

Although this game is completely governed by the rule of chance, it attracts players with its very interesting win rate distribution. How is the game set up? What are the different versions? What are the types of bets? How is a game of roulette played? These are some of the questions this article attempts to answer in a concise manner.

A game of roulette has two main parts: the table and the roulette, also called the wheel. The roulette that inspired the name of the game is a wheel with 37 pockets labeled 0–36.

The wheel features a series of numbers starting with 0 and continues clockwise in the following order: 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25, 17, 34, 6, 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33, 1, 20, 14, 31, 9, 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26. Of those 37 numbers, there are 18 black, 18 red, and 1 green – 0.

The croupier spins the roulette so that it rotates and throws the ivory ball in the opposite direction of the roulette’s rotation. Once the ball stops in one of the 37 numbered pockets, a winner is declared for the round.

The table is used to reproduce the different odds on which the players place their bets. All the numbers are divided into three sections of 12. The first section contains numbers 1–12, the second, 13–24, and the third, 25–36.

More than a particularly interesting distribution of wins for players, roulette is a game whose popularity lies within its many variants. Here are some of the types of roulette a player and plan in an online or traditional casino:

Using the 37 numbers between 0 and 36, this variant is characterized by the simplicity of bets. This type of roulette rightly accounts for the most players not only in Europe but also throughout the world.

It has the same concept as the European version except for the fact that it has an additional number, which increases the house advantage. Consequently, the player’s odds of winning are lower.

This version has the same numbers and tables as European roulette. However, it differs in the ability of the players to make special bets.

This is the variant meant for players who want to win the jackpot. In this type of roulette, a portion of the bets placed by the participants are put into the central pot, and to leave with the jackpot, a player must win 5 times in a row.

This is the least advantageous roulette in terms of odds of winning since this variant has even more numbers, which constitutes a handicap in size.

Without taking into account the odds with 0, there are over 15 ways for a roulette player to place their bets so as to make money while having fun. Here are some of the possible bets in this game of chance:

This is a bet in which the player places their chips on the line separating two numbers. If either of them comes up, the player gets back their bet plus 17 times that amount. This is equivalent to 18 units.

With this option, the bet is placed on one of the 37 numbers between 0 and 36. If the number betted on comes up, the player gets back their bet plus 35 times that amount.

The player must place their chips precisely on the intersecting point of the two lines separating 4 numbers. If one of these four numbers comes up, the player gets back their bet plus 8 times that amount.

This is a split bet on 3 numbers made by placing chips in the middle of either of the two outer lines of a row.

Le joueur qui choisit cette option peut placer sa mise sur l'une des 3 colonnes de The player who chooses this option places their bet on one of the 3 columns of 12 numbers. The chips are placed under the number 34 for the first column, under the 35 for the second column, and under the 36 for the third column. If one of the 12 numbers in the column comes up, the player gets back their bet plus 2 times that amount. The player can also opt for its variant, a two-column split bet, by placing their chips on the line separating two columns. They thus choose to bet on the 24 numbers in these two columns. And if one of these numbers comes up, the player gets back their bet plus ½ that amount.

With this choice, the player places their chips on “1st 12,” “2nd 12,” or “3rd 12.” If one of the 12 numbers out of the dozen chosen comes up, the player gets back their bet plus 2 times that amount. The player can also place their bet on the first 24 or the last 24 numbers. In this case, they get back their bet plus ½ that amount.

The player places their chips on “Odd.” If an odd number comes up, the player who chooses these odds gets back their bet plus that amount.

The player places their chips on “Even.” If an even number comes up, the player who chooses these odds gets back their bet plus that amount.

The player places their chips on “1–18.” If a number between 1 and 18 inclusive comes up, the player gets back their bet plus that amount.

Same concept as above. The player places their chips on “19–36.” If a number between 19 and 36 inclusive comes up, the player gets back their bet plus that amount.

If a black-colored number comes up, the player who chooses these odds gets back their bet plus that amount.

If a red-colored number comes up, the player who chooses these odds gets back their bet plus that amount.

There are also multiple roulette bets using the number 0. The player can also place a split bet on one of the three numbers in the first street and 0. In a successful wager, they will get back their bet plus 17 times that amount. In the same vein, the player can place a straight up bet on 0. If the 0 comes up, the player will get back their bet plus 35 times that amount.

In casinos, the minimum bet allowed is posted at each table. This is the minimum amount of money that the establishment allows each participating player to bet each round. The maximum bet is determined by the minimum. The type of bet will also be taken into account to determine this maximum:

- 30 times the minimum for a straight up
- 60 times the minimum for a split
- 90 times the minimum for a street
- 120 times the minimum for a corner
- 200 times the minimum for a double street
- 500 times the minimum for a column or a dozen
- 1000 times the minimum for an even chance
- 2000 times the minimum for a split bet on two columns or two dozens

The game of roulette begins when the croupier announces to the players, "Place your bets!" From this moment, the croupier sets the ball in motion in the opposition direction of the roulette’s rotation. At the first obstacle the ball encounters, the croupier adds, "No more bets!"

At this stage, it is not possible for players to make, change, or take back a bet. The croupier will then call out the number that comes up without forgetting to mention the even chances affects by it. The game ends with the collection of chips from players who made losing bets and the distribution of chips to players who made winning bets in that round.
